Oh my, fellow Gen-Xers–

August 6th, 2009

Breaking news: John Hughes died.

Wow. I don’t know what to say. Mr. Improbable, a Baby Boomer, asked me if his films were any good. I said I didn’t know. They were simply the vocabulary of my teenage years.

A brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal.

Which one were you? Which of his movies was your favorite? Which of the actors he worked with did you like the best?

    Oh, dear! What sad news.

I loved Ferris, I loved 16 Candles, but there’s nothing like The Breakfast Club. Judd Nelson in that was the best. “So it’s sort of social. Demented and sad, but social.”

Could the icons of my youth please stop dropping dead? It’s really been a bit too much lately. Thank you.

I was Andi in Pretty in Pink: a smart/artsy/weird girl from the poor side of town. Alas, I lacked both the dreamy boyfriend and the ardent admirer, though I’d have been smart and not let Duckie get away.

I loved (who am I kidding: LOVE) The Breakfast Club. Hands down my favorite movie. I have seen it too many times to count.

My favorite, Some Kind of Wonderful, was written by Hughes, but not directed by him. Great soundtrack on that one, too. I’m going to have to dig that out and put it on my iPod . . .
I’ll still watch any of them that I come across on TV.
