Miss Conduct on KRUU & military.com

August 17th, 2009

A couple of fun interviews I did last month have now surfaced online. KRUU-FM is a non-profit radio station in Fairfield, Iowa, that runs a food show called “Great Taste.” Here‘s my guest appearance. Usually I don’t mind doing radio interviews from home, but I would really have liked to be in the studio where that fried cheese was being prepared.

And here is an interview I did for a woman who writes for military newspapers and publications, on the topic of “bad compliments.” What a great idea for an article, eh? It’s a good one, too.

What’s the most awkward/backhanded compliment you’ve ever received?

Recently, a friend told me he was trying to update his look in the hopes of attracting the man of his dreams. I shared a fashion tip (that I buy my khakis at KMart; I actually like the fit). He patted my knee and said “It’s fine for you to look frumpy. You’re already married.” Whoops. The only good thing about this “compliment” is that I’ve gotten a lot of mileage out of it.

You have such a beautiful face, but you’re so fat! Yup, I used to get that a lot as teen. It sticks with you, you know?

“You could be so pretty if you tried.” Back in high school, and IIRC I’d just finished getting dressed and gussied up for a big event.

Definitely the ol’ “You’d be so pretty with some makeup!”

I don’t wear a lick of makeup, but even if I were so inclined, I’d feel compelled not to just to spite the people who have told me the above.

“you clean up nice”. my latin teacher told me that when i showed her my senior prom picture.

If she’d said it in Latin, though, that would have been pretty cool.

Back when I used to compete in ballroom dance competitions: “I love watching you dance! You have such a great smile – it reminds me of when I’m driving my dog and he hangs his head out the car window!”

Part of why it was funny was that it was so sincere.

My dear aunt, who is committed to honesty – her brand, at least: “Men like to date the pretty girls, but they tend to marry not-so-pretty ones.”

Note, this was apropos of sweet FA. And yet I knew exactly which group I belonged in.
