Regarding the second question, I’m confused by the conflation of “candles” and the horror known in my family as “Stinky Candles.” Is the friend allergic/sensitive to ALL candles, or only to scented ones? Because there are lots and lots of lovely candles to be had that fulfill the mood-lighting or festive dinner-table ticket but aren’t scented.

My father is allergic to all burning candles and my daughter is allergic to all things scented…and my favorite thing in the world is stinky candles…
So, I burn candles in my bathroom during a soak. That’s basically it. I did buy some great fake candles that look like pillars burned down a little. There are always challenges to entertaining, but candles should be last on the list! I worry more about how my company will all interact with each other!
Allstonian, it wasn’t really clear in the letter, either. It sounded (in the unedited version) very clearly that the friend was allergic to all candles, but the LW never came out and said that.
