Clotheslines

Today’s Globe features a pro-clothesline editorial. The answer to the first question in this column is one of my all-time favorites.

I cannot wait for warmer weather to hang my cloths out on my line. One of the selling features to my house was a clothes line off of the deck. I could put them out now but I do draw the line (ha!) and don’t hang outside in the winter, I will probably start again towards mid April. It also means that I will shift laundry day to Saturday or Sunday so I can hang it and pull it back in when I am home. And yeah my lines are in the back yard, it only seems right. And I don’t hang unmentionables or socks.
Does anyone consider hanging clothes to dry inside? There may not be enough room for all of one’s laundry, but at least underwear could be accomodated. Perhaps doing so would mean only needing one line outside for drying.
I’ve seen retractable clotheslines for indoors, but I haven’t tried one myself. I have spare closet space with a rod that I use to hang lots of clothes on hangers to dry inside. But, my washer is really good at spinning enough water out of the laundry to make for quick sunless hang-drying.
It’s easy for me to say all this as part of a two-person household with no children. If my five-person family used outside clotheslines growing up, we would have always had stuff hanging out to dry. I imagine neighbors would take even less kindly to that. Personally, I’d be fine with all of my neighbors having clotheslines in their backyards because that gives everyone even more privacy.
