Because I don’t particularly want to register with boston.com, I put this here:

    Re: names

One of my dearest friends kept her ex-husband’s name after their divorce, partially so she and her daughter would have the same last name, but mostly because her father was an abusive jackass, and she wasn’t about to take his name back. I don’t think ex has any objections.

When E and I got married, we decided to scrap our original last names and start over, for both symbolic and logistical purposes. We wanted the same last name; neither of us wanted to take the other’s, and hyphenation would have been some kind of six-syllable monstrosity.

(There is no good way to combine a dactyl and an amphibrach. Yes, I looked those up on Wikipedia to sound smart.)

Also, I can’t help but notice that whenever someone snarks at you on your column, they almost invariably call you “Miss Manners”, which makes me wonder if you and Judith Martin get each other’s mail a lot.
