Fashion blogger FAIL

July 1st, 2010

So much for my dreams of stylish glory! When I took Milo for his walk this morning, a woman in the park asked me, “Are you an MIT scientist?” When I demurred, she replied, “Well, you dress like one.”

Burn!

I guess that’s what I get for going out in my cargo Dockers and Project Steve t-shirt! Don’t tell Peacebang on me, okay?

(Incidentally, this woman was sitting on the ground, next to her cat in a carrier. Did she take it out so it could enjoy the nice weather? Cat people, is this something you do?)

Perhaps she was a Russian spy conducting her research.

It depends a lot on the cat, but I don’t put mine in carriers any more than necessary for vet trips and such. I can’t picture mine enjoying the outdoors unless they actually got to wander around.

I am not a cat person but I currently occupy a house that has a cat in it, that is how much I love my DH. But I have to commend her for having it in a carrier. I hate when cats roam free, why are they so special? I think they need to be licensed and leashed like a dog, I have been menaced by a few free roaming cat in my day and I do not like it. Plus I hate when they decide it is ok to use my porch to lounge and cover my patio furniture with their fur…gross, I leave my house to avoid cat fur.

Oh yeah because of my rant I forgot to mention DH used to take his one cat out on a leash she had no problem with it,the other one that is still with us never liked it so she doesn’t get taken for walks.

Maybe the woman lacks a fixed nighttime address? And that’s why her cat was in a carrier? I’ve seen that oodles of times.

We used to have a cat leash, but it only worked with some cats.

My cat doesn’t really like the outside…he likes looking at it from the inside where the food is kept.

That outfit is just one of the many faces of Cambridge. Perfectly fine for a morning walk with Milo.

Confessed cat person. Actually, I’m a dog person, too, but can’t properly take care of one with my schedule. ANYway, I have one cat who likes the leash, but mostly so I can plop him in the grass and he can eat it. He’s not so good at “walking” like a dog (though he does play a mean game of fetch when he’s in the mood).

I would love being mistaken for an MIT scientist. Now you know what one of your sooper sekret spy costumes can be!

Veronica, that’s a good point. (Incidentally, I did run into a woman in the park once who I thought was homeless … and it turned out SHE actually was an MIT scientist!)

WES, I like cats, but I agree with you. I agree with ciou BECAUSE I like cats. And because I saw one get run over once and *not* killed … cats belong indoors with their people, as far as I’m concerned. At least if you’re in the city or suburbs. Too dangerous for kitty and unfair to the neighbors otherwise.

I’d argue that cats belong indoors everywhere, because outdoor cats in the burbs and country are as likely to be eaten by something as they are to be hit by a car.

Although there are some cats that you just CAN’T keep inside. My sister’s old cat tore up every screen in the house so he could go outside and be the neighborhood tom cat. You know, the one cat who doesn’t leave his yard but makes sure no other cats come into the yard. But he wasn’t allowed outside after dark…bc things could eat him.

Count me among the folks who fervently believe that cats belong indoors – my family home abuts the Allston railyard, and in the mid-1960s my mom’s then-favorite cat was killed on the tracks. We haven’t let a cat out since then, and have had dozens of cats who lived to ripe old ages as a consequence.

Not only are cats that are allowed to roam outdoors open to harm from predators, diseases, poisoning, vehicles, and so on, but as predators themselves they’re very harmful to local populations of small animals of many kinds – some vermin, some not.

I’m a bit surprised by WES’s statement that they’ve been menaced by free-roaming cats, though – I’ve never, EVER been menaced by a cat on the street, even by any of the feral cats that currently populate my neighborhood.

As other posters have said, some cats are temperamentally amenable to going outdoors with a harness and leash, but many (if not most) are not.

Our cats stay inside because they’re so very domesticated that if they did get out, they’d get 1) run over by a Big Wheel 2) eaten by a squirrel and/or 3) lost in the back yard. Although they probably wouldn’t last 30 seconds before they were crying to get back in.

They all do fine on leash, although we don’t take them for walks per se. Delilah hates carriers so much that she screams and wets herself, so we don’t even try that with her anymore.

I had a friend who was a vet and kept records for years in his practice and indoor cats live about twice as long as ones that are allowed to run free. My felines have been inside ever since, and perfectly happy about it. I’ve had some I could leash (but not walk — they were happy to be carried to interesting places, though) but not the current pair. Not without arrange for blood transfusions for me first, anyway.

Veronica (and a lot of other commenters) is right; cats should be indoors unless you can take them out in some controlled fashion (leash or carrier, if they’ll put up with that sort of thing).

I grew up in the rural middle of nowhere, and yet nearly every cat my family had was killed on the road. “Rural middle of nowhere” also means that people feel free to drive 55 on a windy back road because your odds of being pulled over are pretty slim.

I have two cats now, and they both stay indoors. One, Tom, wants very badly to be an outdoor cat, but he’s at least stopped going through screens now.
