The life, and the mind

November 12th, 2010

Usually I just Tweet articles that I think might be of interest to you, but this one was so fascinating to me I had to lift it up in a blog post. It’s the story of an academic whose son is severely physically and cognitively impaired. How can we make reason and learning the center of our lives, of our value systems, and still find value in the life of a person who cannot reflect, cannot reason, and never will? It’s a beautiful piece and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

Wow. I’ve got tears in my eyes.

This kind of thing has very much been on my mind lately as I’m expecting my first child in April. We just got back the results of the early testing showing that everything is as normal as it can be, but that of course assumes that nothing new goes wrong in the next five months or at the birth. What if I end up with a child like August? How will we handle it? How will it affect our lives?

I do know that whatever happens, I will absolutely love my child. But I won’t pretend that I’m hoping and praying (inasmuch as I ever pray) for a healthy, normal baby.
