A little more about my gym …
There were some excellent responses to my post from last week about how much the experience of exercise has changed for me, and I hope to respond to some of them in a follow-up later this week. In the meantime, though I have to share this with you. My gym, my wonderful, body-positive, empowering, feminist, healing-space health club, was showing “127 Hours” this weekend.
I got on the elliptical and saw that the featured movie was showing a guy walking along a canyon with his arm in a sling. “Hah!” I thought to myself. “That looks like ’127 Hours!’ But that would be crazy.” And then I noticed the woman next to me, and the tears streaming down her cheeks. (The extra fluid loss could not have been good for her.) It was, indeed, “127 Hours.”
Who in their right mind would think this is appropriate programming?
The gym accepts suggestions for movies, so it’s entirely possible that all the other members do. And I suppose it’s inspiring, and puts one’s own workout pain in perspective. But good Lord.
This is, mind you, the same health club that showed “Life is Beautiful” during Oscar week. Oscar or no, genocide does not make for a good workout flick. Seriously, Beloved Health Club, how about some Bollywood musicals, or one of those movies in which Robert Downey Jr. takes off his shirt?

This makes me glad my gym only shows music videos (easy to tune out/ ignore) in the weight room, and that my other primary form of exercise is swimming, where watching movies or TV isn’t really an option.
I could imagine watching Predator while working out…I mean what more motivation is there to run than the thought of an evil alien chasing you and killing you for sport?
But 127 hours…and Life is Beautiful are not materials I want on while exercising.
Ahahaha! That’s hilarious. Although in my more self-pitying moments, I may pretend I’m a contestant in The Long Walk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Long_Walk). Exercise: I am trying to like it.
My vote would be for something like Strictly Ballroom: upbeat, good music, showing people enjoying moving around.
Still better than what my old gym showed: episodes of that show where contestants all tried to lose weight and keep it off.
